Alonso Shows Speed on D2 at Valencia

February 3rd, 2011 gharls       No comments

We're Still Yawning ...

Hold on … well, actually, no one leapt out their lounger upon news that the Scuderia (with Alonso) moved atop the speed charts during testing at Valencia.

In our opinion, F1 testing only just barely rises above room temperature when either (1), a young rookie driver, (2), a new team,  or (3), a backmarker team offers up a brow raising run worthy of print (or electrons, I presume).

We’re still waiting …

Alonso Shoots to Top of Pile for Ferrari

With little over a month to go before the season begins, Valencia was a hive of activity as this week’s test continued at the Spanish circuit on Wednesday. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso emerged as the quickest runner from the 12 teams and 15 drivers in action, clocking a best time of 1m 13.307s in the Italian team’s brand-new F150.

February 2nd, 2011 gharls       No comments

Mike Conway Shakes Off His Indy Disaster and Finds a Seat at Andretti.

Those eight of us who watched the Indy 500 last Memorial Day weekend remember the horrific shunt that pitched Mike Conway up into the catchfence, then breathed a sigh of relief as news arrived of his survival.

A true talent, Conway catches a big break and snatches a ride with Andretti Autosport … a quality machine will truly display Conway’s skill. Don’t be surprised to find Conway as the team’s fastest runner (apologies to Danica fans) by the time Indy rolls around again

Conway Will Drive for Andretti Autosport

Mike Conway never doubted getting behind the wheel of an IZOD IndyCar Series car again after suffering back and leg injuries in a crash late in the Indianapolis 500 last May.

Enough Chit-Chat, Sebbie ... Just Hand Over the Red Bull Beanie!

Defending F1 WC Sebastian Vettel, surprising no one, set the pace during maiden testing at Valencia, Spain yesterday, and then set the souvenir hunters running for their keyboards after again sporting his uber-cool Red Bull beanie during the postrun news gabby.

Nice topper, Seb!

Sorry, Felipe ... I Get to Drive it First ...

The F1 Hoopla gets underway as the Scuderia unveils its new F150 for all to enjoy.

The hype is soooo tedious for long time F1 enthusiasts, yet there is something special about catching a glimpse of a new Horse for the first time …

Ferrari Unveils New F150 Chassis

Ferrari became the first team to launch their 2011 challenger on Friday, as Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa took the wraps of the F150. Bergmeister Takes Rolex 24 Pole

Longtime Porsche Driver Jorg Bergmeister Puts Flying Lizard on Pole ...

Flying Lizard Motorsports, making its maiden foray into prototype racing, raises a few brows after Jorg Bergmeister puts the new machine on pole for Saturday’s (Jan. 29) Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Why do we care?

Frankly, it’s about time that Zuffenhausen actually put a race motor on the track at Daytona. During my lifetime, sportscar racing only thrives when Porsche is in the hunt, and we’ve always contended that the Rolex 24 has lost its luster ever since the France Family decided to make it difficult for German makes to compete full bore in the top racing class.

We love Ganassi and the other traditional teams that make the Rolex fun to watch, yet there’s nothing like waking up on Sunday morning and finding a Porsche motor in the lead …

The Silver Fox Never Pulls A Punch …

January 28th, 2011 gharls       No comments

Pearson Has Never Met a Grenade He Didn't Like ...

The Wood Brothers Organization invited NASCAR racing legend David Pearson to Charlotte in order to celebrate a commemorative paint scheme on the 21 car that honors the Great Silver Fox, and true to form, the ever frank Pearson again does not fail to disappoint …

On Junior:

“If I was him and had as much money as he had, I’d retire …”

On NASCAR rule changes:

“I don’t like [any] rules,” he said. “Of course, [former NASCAR vice president Jim] Hunter always told me I didn’t like them to start with. It’s different right now, it is.”

On NASCAR attendance:

“I guess that they out-priced themselves, or something …”

Did Red Bull Play It Fast and Loose in 2010?

January 27th, 2011 gharls       No comments

Loose Lips May Sink Ships Within FOTA ...

McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh desperately moved to shove a heavy lid upon a bubbling cauldron as F1 enthusiasts caught a first whiff of the backbench sniping at Red Bull’s success in 2010.

It’s clear that the leading teams resented the bold technical advances made by Red Bull … no one likes getting outsmarted by the tyro … but alleging fast and loose play by Red Bull?  What? McLaren and Ferrari, the twin masters of regulatory deceit and duplicity, now showing some incredible gall by calling a pitch foul?

I realize that the Brits are priggish about such things … but Formula 1 needs more salacious stuff like this. Reminds the rest of us that it’s OK to enjoy zillion-dollar-robots driving zillion-dollar-machines around the globe in a zillion-dollar-roadshow.

Whitmarsh Urges a Big ‘Shhush’ to FOTA …

Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) chairman Martin Whitmarsh insists there is no finger-pointing going on within the organisation following suggestions that reigning double F1 World Champion Red Bull transgressed the Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA) last year – but he does stress that ‘it’s best we keep our issues inside the room’.
