NASCAR Gingerly Steps Into the E15 Pond

NASCAR, which caught most of us out of pocket with its stunning migration off leaded fuel, continued down the green path to who knows where this week as the testing field took its laps for the first time with the Ethanol (E15) blend. No apparent problems, yet one wonders at the marketing value behind the change … will the fans be all that impressed?

Ethanol clearly costs NASCAR more to implement within its top series. More importantly, (1), ethanol combustion will cost the consumer more per gallon, (2), the ‘coolness’ in its inherent ‘green-ness’ swiftly disappears when one considers the high degree of energy required (read: oil) to produce the fuel, and (3), despite the doomsayers, many experts project a glut of global oil supplies for the next twenty years due to decreased demand (including China).

Fill ‘er up: Teams off and running with E15 fuel

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Sprint Cup Series’ introduction to E15 Ethanol-blended Sunoco race fuel began in earnest during the past three days of Preseason Thunder at Daytona International Speedway.

And while NASCAR teams, their manufacturers and engine suppliers have had a lot of experience working with the substance, it appears the intricate details of the switchover from unleaded race fuel will be intriguing.
