Ferrari Unveils New F150 For 2011

January 28th, 2011 gharls No comments

Sorry, Felipe ... I Get to Drive it First ...

The F1 Hoopla gets underway as the Scuderia unveils its new F150 for all to enjoy.

The hype is soooo tedious for long time F1 enthusiasts, yet there is something special about catching a glimpse of a new Horse for the first time …

Ferrari Unveils New F150 Chassis

Ferrari became the first team to launch their 2011 challenger on Friday, as Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa took the wraps of the F150. Ferrari hope the new car – named to mark the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification – will return the Scuderia to championship glory after they missed out on both 2010 titles.

Bergmeister Takes Rolex 24 Pole

January 28th, 2011 gharls No comments

Longtime Porsche Driver Jorg Bergmeister Puts Flying Lizard on Pole ...

Flying Lizard Motorsports, making its maiden foray into prototype racing, raises a few brows after Jorg Bergmeister puts the new machine on pole for Saturday’s (Jan. 29) Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Why do we care?

Frankly, it’s about time that Zuffenhausen actually put a race motor on the track at Daytona. During my lifetime, sportscar racing only thrives when Porsche is in the hunt, and we’ve always contended that the Rolex 24 has lost its luster ever since the France Family decided to make it difficult for German makes to compete full bore in the top racing class.

We love Ganassi and the other traditional teams that make the Rolex fun to watch, yet there’s nothing like waking up on Sunday morning and finding a Porsche motor in the lead …

The Silver Fox Never Pulls A Punch …

January 28th, 2011 gharls No comments

Pearson Has Never Met a Grenade He Didn't Like ...

The Wood Brothers Organization invited NASCAR racing legend David Pearson to Charlotte in order to celebrate a commemorative paint scheme on the 21 car that honors the Great Silver Fox, and true to form, the ever frank Pearson again does not fail to disappoint …

On Junior:

“If I was him and had as much money as he had, I’d retire …”

On NASCAR rule changes:

“I don’t like [any] rules,” he said. “Of course, [former NASCAR vice president Jim] Hunter always told me I didn’t like them to start with. It’s different right now, it is.”

On NASCAR attendance:

“I guess that they out-priced themselves, or something …”

Did Red Bull Play It Fast and Loose in 2010?

January 27th, 2011 gharls No comments

Loose Lips May Sink Ships Within FOTA ...

McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh desperately moved to shove a heavy lid upon a bubbling cauldron as F1 enthusiasts caught a first whiff of the backbench sniping at Red Bull’s success in 2010.

It’s clear that the leading teams resented the bold technical advances made by Red Bull … no one likes getting outsmarted by the tyro … but alleging fast and loose play by Red Bull?  What? McLaren and Ferrari, the twin masters of regulatory deceit and duplicity, now showing some incredible gall by calling a pitch foul?

I realize that the Brits are priggish about such things … but Formula 1 needs more salacious stuff like this. Reminds the rest of us that it’s OK to enjoy zillion-dollar-robots driving zillion-dollar-machines around the globe in a zillion-dollar-roadshow.

Whitmarsh Urges a Big ‘Shhush’ to FOTA …

Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) chairman Martin Whitmarsh insists there is no finger-pointing going on within the organisation following suggestions that reigning double F1 World Champion Red Bull transgressed the Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA) last year – but he does stress that ‘it’s best we keep our issues inside the room’.

Go Figure … Merc Simulators Make Schuey Dizzy

January 26th, 2011 gharls No comments

Say It Ain't So!

It’s like saying that Superman needs his little woobie before going night-night …

Longtime F1 enthusiasts chortled into their coffee after learning that alltime F1 mountain Michael Schumacher cannot handle Merc’s current version of cockpit simulators due to his susceptibility to motion sickness.

Are you kidding me?

We’re talking about the same driver who holds the reputation for sustaining the highest level of g-force possible under test conditions … the same driver heralded for his ability to take a loose setup and drive the same to victory … the same driver who chews on nails and sips on battery acid for a midnight nosh … not our Schuey …

Ignore the man behind the curtain while Mercedes desperately attempts to retool its simulators to account for Schumacher’s persistent vertigo.

F1 Simulators Making Schumacher Sick

Formula One simulators make seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher sick and his Mercedes GP team are investing in the latest technology to make him feel better.

Richard Childress Calls Out Jimmie J

January 26th, 2011 gharls No comments

RCR Declares 'It's On' In 2011 ...

RCR honcho Richard Childress generated a bit of grist for the NASCAR mill after calling out the 48 and his five consecutive championships in a presser yesterday.

Childress has the means, the experience, and the will to press the challenge to Johnson and Knaus, but does he have the drivers? Harvick and Bowyer both possess the skills and the machines to pull even with the Champion, yet do either have the mettle to outlast him in a ten race shootout?

Not yet …

RCR must master the 48 at Martinsville, Bristol, Dover, and Charlotte before convincing us of any palace revolt anytime soon. As long as Johnson remains the dominant threat at those circuits, no one (not even heir apparent Kyle Busch) will topple the (postmodern) King in 2011.

Childress Throws Down the Gauntlet for 2011

“This year is the year to knock Jimmie [Johnson] from the throne,” Childress said. “We were close with Kevin [Harvick] last year, but this is the year to do it — and it’s going to be RCR, I feel certain. So I’m going to make that [prediction].”

Franchitti Steps Out on the Stump in Toronto …

January 25th, 2011 gharls No comments

Dario Plays Pitchman North of USA Border

Charming Dario Franchitti puts on the seersucker and touts the virtues of Izod IndyCar on a visit to Toronto.

IndyCar needs alluring faces such as DF to sell the sport to a disinterested global motorsport fan base, yet glossies along won’t do the trick. Want some ideas?

– no matter the excuses, IndyCar needs a marque war.

– more candid one-on-one with drivers. Do it during the pre-race; have a former driver conduct the interviews. Please don’t let ABC near the production-keep it breezy and unstylized.

– shock us with something radical. Night race at Indy? October at Daytona? Special event at Spa?

Franchitti Says IndyCar has Turned the Corner

Dario Franchitti has been on both sides of the open wheel racing wars in North America.

And through it all he has always held the belief that given a chance a united INDYCAR racing series could reclaim the glory of the era when Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and anybody with the name Unser ruled motor racing on this side of the Atlantic.
