Fangio (Alfa Romeo) suffers mechanicals and retires on Lap 9.
A. Ascari (Ferrari) assumes the lead on Lap 14 as pit service commences.
Farina assumes lead on Lap 16. Ascari gives chase, yet suffers mechanicals (engine) on Lap 20. Farina drives on to victory.

Ferrari’s new 4.5 liter V12 entry makes its debut at Monza yet cannot withstand the withering pace established by Farina and the proven Alfettas. Farina prevails over Fangio for Formula 1’s maiden driver’s championship as some observers suggest a staged result by Alfa Romeo in order to permit the Italian engineer to win the title before his home crowd.
